Talent Shows, Track Meets, and Field Trips, Oh My!

Submitted by janelle.barrett on Fri, 04/27/2018 - 13:22

There's so many great things going on this time of year, that it's hard to keep up with all the fun! We are grateful for the beautiful weather that helps our activities go smoothly.

This past week, many grade levels had talent shows. Aiyana Sherman in 6th grade shared her Native American heritage with a shawl dance! Fourth graders took a field trip to Utah Lake to learn about wetlands, fish, and mosquitos (yuck)! Fifth grade competed in a track meet, and many of our Cherry Creek crocs placed in their events.

We Learn: Kindergarten Plays With Motion

Last week, Discovery Gateway Children's Museum brought their Potential Energy program to the kindergarten students and taught them about force and motion. The students had fun learning about push and pull with a couple different hands-on experiments. By synergizing and working as a team, they were able to play tug-of-war, move a balloon without touching it, and make their hover crafts move in a perfect circle.

We Lead: Cherry Creek Achieves Lighthouse Status

Last week, Franklin Covey designated Cherry Creek Elementary as the newest Lighthouse School! Among thousands of schools world-wide that implement The Leader in Me program, only around 380 schools have received this honor. We could not be more proud of this achievement!

For the last four years, teachers, staff, students, parents, and community members have worked to teach the 7 Habits and leadership principles to our students. Numberless people and hours have been contributed to shaping Cherry Creek into an incredible school. In order to achieve Lighthouse status, a school must demonstrate "mature" and "excellent" methods of implementing leadership principles. Although this is a great measure of our success, we will continue to grow and find better ways to practice leadership principles.

To celebrate reaching this milestone, Cherry Creek will host a family and community celebration on Monday, May 7th. The event will include an award ceremony, food, and entertainment. More details coming soon, but put it on your calendar, as it will be an event not to be missed!

We Inspire: Penny Wars for Grandma Long

Submitted by janelle.barrett on Tue, 04/10/2018 - 11:38

Beginning today through April 18th, the Student Lighthouse Team is sponsoring this year's Penny Wars to benefit Grandma Long. Grandma Long has volunteered in our kindergarten classrooms for the past 12 years, and has blessed so many students and teachers with her kindness and help. Here's how the penny wars will work:

Each grade level has a jar in the office. Pennies and cash count for "positive" points. (Penny = one point, $1 = 100 points). Silver coins count as "negative" points when placed in other grade levels' jars. At the end of the day on April 18th, each grade's points will be counted. The grade level with the most points will earn a donut party. If the whole school collects more than $1,000, the whole school will earn an extra recess to celebrate.

Thank you for your generosity on behalf of our Cherry Creek family!
