by Janelle Barrett

Cheryl Nielson is one of our incredible fifth grade teachers! She attended practically every university in Utah--BYU, USU, UVU, and SUU--to earn her Master's of Education and Math & ESL Endorsements. Mrs. Nielson is married to her best friend from high school, although they didn't date until after high school. She has three kids, one of whom is serving an LDS mission in Chile. In her (very spare) time, she enjoys running, reading, and gardening. When she gets stressed, she likes to organize closets. Her guilty pleasures is a pan of brownies and a good book. And just in case you were wondering, her favorite gift to receive is gift cards. We love you Mrs. Nielson!

Croc Walk & Carnival MOVED to 26th

Submitted by janelle.barrett on Thu, 09/22/2016 - 13:46

Due to a cold and wet weather forecast on Friday, we have decided to move the Croc Walk and Carnival to Monday, September 26 from 5:30-7:45 p.m.  Our PTA has put in a lot of time and effort to make this a great event and we do not want the weather to spoil it.  Sorry about the change!  We appreciate your understanding and hope that you can all attend on Monday evening.  It will be a fun and uniting event!!

Also, as a reminder, we appreciate the pledges that your children are getting for the Croc Walk and encourage them to get more.  All of the money raised goes towards putting on the many great events that happen at Cherry Creek.  FYI-- the Croc Walk will begin right at 5:30 and end at 6:15 p.m.  Following the Croc Walk, the carnival games and bounce slides will be opened up.  The food booths will be open the entire time.

Thank You for your Support!

Our first spotlight this week is Chelsie Bergera, one of our kind and caring kindergarten teachers! Mrs. Bergera loves being a teacher at Cherry Creek because she loves the staff, students, and parents she gets to work with. She has always been inspired to be a teacher because of the teachers she had growing up. Mrs. Bergera attended UVU and SUU to earn her master's degree and endorsements in ESL and Early Childhood Education. She loves teaching writer's workshop. If Mrs. Bergera could have a perfect day, it would include camping with her family and eating chips and salsa from Los Hermanos. She has been married to her husband, Wes, for 8 years. Mrs. Bergera loves receiving treats and gift cards.  Thanks for being so awesome, Mrs. Bergera!

Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Andersen!

Today's spotlight is Troy Andersen, our school counselor! Mr. Andersen is so loved by the students--it's not uncommon to see kids of all ages dropping by his office to see if he's here. He went to BYU and USU to receive his Master's degree in psychology, emphasizing in school counseling.  Since he was a teenager, he's always wanted to work with children and youth, and he felt like schools are the best place to make the biggest difference.  Mr. Andersen's guilty pleasure is shopping at yard sales, and he loves hiking with his wife and 7 year old "miracle" son. His favorite teacher gift to receive is gift cards he can use to take his wife on impressive dates! Thanks for helping ALL of us, Mr. Andersen!

How Many Drops of Water Fit on a Penny?

Submitted by janelle.barrett on Wed, 09/14/2016 - 15:30
by Stephanie Truscott

Mrs. Truscott's sixth-grade class has been learning about the scientific method this week. We did an experiment where we measured how many drops of water fit on a penny to observe the surface tension of the water, and how the molecules stick together. Some groups got up to 30 drops! Next, we soaked the pennies in soap, and saw that we couldn't fit nearly as many drops because the surface of the penny became slippery. It was so fun to see their curiosity and excitement!

Starting this week, we will spotlight a few teachers on our website to help you get to know them!

Kristi Suguturaga, or more commonly known as "Mrs. Sugu" is our first spotlight teacher! She is one of our fabulous first grade teachers. She has been married for 11 years and has 5 kids, some of whom attend Cherry Creek. Kristi went to BYU-Hawaii and loved spending hours of time in the art studio. She loves endless days on the beach, biking, yoga, and did you know she can touch her nose with her tongue? Mrs. Sugu says she loves Cherry Creek because the students are "just the coolest kids to be around!" Her favorite teacher gift she's ever received was a hand drawn picture of a unicorn. Thanks, Mrs. Sugu for helping Cherry Creek be a great place!

Faculty Fall Social

Last night, the faculty and their families got together for dinner and games at the Springville reservoir. Mrs. Golding was so generous to plan the social event and coordinate sign-ups for food. As teachers, we are so busy planning, tracking student data, and grading that we don't have much time to spend with each other. It was a special treat for us to strengthen our friendships while having a chance to kick back and relax!

In Union There Is Strength

Cherry Creek faces a unique challenge this year.  Following the boundary changes in Springville, we now have 3 schools merging together as one.  In order for this to be successful, we need to come together as parents, students and staff.  If we can unite ourselves together and look out for each other then we will create an environment where our students can learn, feel safe and ultimately, be happy!

The theme that was selected for the 2016-17 school year is, “In Union there is Strength” ~Aesop.  For our students, this theme represents having the courage to get to know other students, treating others with kindness and respect, showing school spirit and choosing to be happy! As our students do these things, the unity at Cherry Creek will grow and we will create a school that we are all proud to be a part of!
