Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Nielson!

Submitted by janelle.barrett on

Cheryl Nielson is one of our incredible fifth grade teachers! She attended practically every university in Utah--BYU, USU, UVU, and SUU--to earn her Master's of Education and Math & ESL Endorsements. Mrs. Nielson is married to her best friend from high school, although they didn't date until after high school. She has three kids, one of whom is serving an LDS mission in Chile. In her (very spare) time, she enjoys running, reading, and gardening. When she gets stressed, she likes to organize closets. Her guilty pleasures is a pan of brownies and a good book.

Our first spotlight this week is Chelsie Bergera, one of our kind and caring kindergarten teachers! Mrs. Bergera loves being a teacher at Cherry Creek because she loves the staff, students, and parents she gets to work with. Mrs. Bergera attended UVU and SUU to earn her master's degree and endorsements in ESL and Early Childhood Education. She loves teaching writer's workshop. If Mrs.

Today's spotlight is Troy Andersen, our school counselor! Mr. Andersen is so loved by the students--it's not uncommon to see kids of all ages dropping by his office to see if he's here. He went to BYU and USU to receive his Master's degree in psychology, emphasizing in school counseling.  Since he was a teenager, he's always wanted to work with children and youth, and he felt like schools are the best place to make the biggest difference.  Mr. Andersen's guilty pleasure is shopping at yard sales, and he loves hiking with his wife and 7 year old "miracle" son.

How Many Drops of Water Fit on a Penny?

Submitted by janelle.barrett on

Mrs. Truscott's sixth-grade class has been learning about the scientific method this week. We did an experiment where we measured how many drops of water fit on a penny to observe the surface tension of the water, and how the molecules stick together. Some groups got up to 30 drops! Next, we soaked the pennies in soap, and saw that we couldn't fit nearly as many drops because the surface of the penny became slippery. It was so fun to see their curiosity and excitement!
