We Learn: Internet Safety During White Ribbon Week

Submitted by janelle.barrett on

This week is White Ribbon Week to teach students about internet and media safety. On Monday, students participated in a "Net Smartz" assembly, where they learned strategies for how to stay safe on the internet and manage how much time they spend with technology. They watched a video from Kid President that reminded them how ordinary people can do extraordinary things by being a smart digital citizen.

Students will participate in activities every day this week to focus on different points of internet and media safety.

We Inspire: 7th Graders Job Shadow at Cherry Creek

Submitted by janelle.barrett on

Last week, we were lucky to have a group of seventh grade students from Springville Junior High come to Cherry Creek to job shadow some of our teachers. Students helped with some basic teacher responsibilities and worked with the students during instruction time. They even got to enjoy their lunch break with the teachers in the faculty room. Cherry Creek is so lucky to have amazing teachers who are so willing to mentor and lead students!

We Learn: 6th Grade Engineering Fair

Submitted by janelle.barrett on

The first ever 6th grade Engineering Fair was held today, and students were interviewed and judged by volunteer engineers! In years past, 6th graders would participate in the Science Fair to learn about the scientific method. Since a change in the core curriculum this year, students now learn science with a focus on engineering and problem solving. The requirements were simple: think of a problem you face in daily living, and build a product that will help with that problem. They documented their materials, processes, and trials to find out if their product was effective.

We Inspire: Victory Assembly

Submitted by janelle.barrett on

Last week was January's victory assembly. We had our traditional victory lap to cheer on the students of the month and top croc award recipients. During the assembly, students got to watch another round of "Cherry Creek's Got Talent", get an update on how our school-wide WIGs are progressing, and find out what February's "catch of the creek" will be.

Students have made excellent progress on their reading WIG! The "water level" on the WIG tracker in the cafeteria is rising quickly.

We Learn: Milky Way Tectonic Plates

Submitted by janelle.barrett on

Mrs. Peck's 5th grade class got to use food to learn about Earth's tectonic plates and how they move to create mountains and valleys. Who knew graham crackers sliding on caramel could be so much fun? Volcano eruptions would be more like an ice cream party if the mantel was caramel like in a Milky Way!

We Lead: 6th Graders Meet Their WIGs

Submitted by janelle.barrett on

These four boys in Mrs. Truscott's 6th grade class have been working really hard on their reading WIGs! They have each moved up three reading levels so far this year.  We have been collecting data on what can help us become better readers, setting realistic goals and tracking our progress every day. We are so proud of their hard work!
