The sixth graders are learning about integers and absolute values. They played a game called Absolute Value War where they had positive and negative numbers. Both students turned over a card and made a statement about what the number was and it's absolute value. The number with the lowest absolute value (number closest to zero) won. Students really enjoyed playing the game and improving their knowledge of integers.

Field Trip

Cherry Creek third graders spent much of the month of November learning about our bodies and how to keep them healthy.  We even got to go on a field trip to Allen's grocery store.  At Allen's we learned about the importance of eating a variety of fruits and vegetables in order to get all of the different vitamins our body needs.  We also learned that fresh produce is the best way to get our fruits and vegetables, and we know how to make the best choices when drinking juice and eating canned fruits and vegetables.

Parents & Pastries

What a phenomenal turnout of parents and children to our annual eating and reading morning! The cinnamon rolls were delicious, accompanied by milk, chocolate milk and orange juice. Families snuggled up with their goodies and a good book and read and read and read. We loved that grandparents joined us also. A big thank you to the PTA for organizing this great event. We look forward to Dads and Donuts in the spring!

Students at Cherry Creek were able to watch amazing bike stunts from Rich & Skyler Wieber of Minnesota. The father and son pair performed incredible tricks and educated the students in bike safety and how to live an awesome, drug free life. Drew from Mrs. Baldwin's class got to demonstrate how to check your bike to make sure it's safe to ride. At the end of the assembly, Skyler Wieber jumped his bike over Mr. Duncan, Mrs. Nielson, and former Cherry Creek principal Mr. Balzotti. Kayla, also, from Mrs. Baldwin's 2nd grade class, won a bike as part of the Ken Garff Road to Success reading program, and 1 student from every class won a book. Congratulations to all the winners!  Let's remember and help each other have a healthy and drug free life!  Thank you so much to our PTA helpers and teachers who made Red Ribbon Week a great success!

Cherry Creek Elementary held an assembly on November 12 to honor Veterans Day. The students were able to take part in a flag ceremony presented by the Springville American Legion.  The American Legion members each spoke briefly about where they served, their responsibilities and their love of country. Each veteran was also given a stack of thank you cards made by the students. Some of the 6th graders had this to say afterwards about the assembly:

"I learned that freedom is not free but because of people's sacrifices we are free." - Allison Mulligan

"I love how they could come to our school and share. I felt so emotional while I was watching the slide show. I dang near cried. I remember so clearly one of them saying 'Freedom is not free.' - Beth Williams
"I might join the army or one of the those branches cause it will be an honor to travel the world. The veterans are honored and I am grateful when they serve in war." - Kaylyn Wolfe

William Penrod and his uncle, Dr. Penrod

Students in Mrs. Taylor’s third grade have been busy participating in the Great Brain Club. Each month students have the opportunity to learn more about the world around them. Parents, family and friends help them research and gather information about subjects that are interesting. Next they bring the information to school and teach our class. During October we have been learning about our bodies. Shown in the picture is William Penrod with his uncle, Dr. Penrod.  Together they showed the class how a cast is put on your arm when you break a bone.  Others who presented Great Brain Reports were Juvenal Estrella, Rhett Holcomb, Georgia Reynolds, Nash Scott, Aimee Taylor, Jarren Pickett, Lily Diaz, John Vargas, and Sophi Hickenbotham.   During the month of November and December we will be studying holiday customs around the world.

Pizza Party!

Cherry Creek students have been working hard all year to earn GOLD Croc Claws.  Once a claw has been earned then those students get to draw a number for the Golden Croc Club bingo board.  These students are the first lucky bingo winners and got to party with the principal during lunch.  They enjoyed pizza, breadsticks and games for an entire hour--congratulations to our winners!
